Part of the original 6th Army was sent to Korel as an invading force under the command of High Fist Greymane, but the High Fist was ultimately undermined and disgraced by his forces. A young Rellish Jal Keth was among officers who testified against him. After conquering the local population, the majority of the remaining Malazans decided that they'd much rather keep any taxes being collected for the Empire. Yeull 'ul Taith declared himself Overlord of Fist and installed himself in Fortress Paliss.

The Malaz 8th Army, under the command of Divisional Fist Khemet Shul, was part of the Malazan Expeditionary Force which was the army sent to Korel by Emperor Mallick Rel.
